"Cash for Clunkers"

You could get up to $4,500 from the federal government for trading in an old, inefficient vehicle for a new, more efficient one!!!

President Obama signed into law a program the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is calling the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), casually referred to as the "Cash for Clunkers" program. This is a federal program that helps you purchase a new, more fuel efficient vehicle when you trade in a less fuel efficient vehicle.

According to www.cars.gov, here are some important Things you should know about the program:

• Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
• Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify
• Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
• Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in
• You don't need a voucher, dealers (AutoTeam Delaware) will apply a credit at purchase
• Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
• The vehicle that you are trading in is required to be destroyed. Therefore, the value you of your trade in is not likely to exceed its scrap value. The law requires the dealer to disclose to you and estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in vehicle.

• The Original MSRP of the New Car you purchase must not exceed $45,000
• The car must be driven in to the dealership (i.e. not towed in)
• Rebates are either $3,500 or $4,500, based on the difference in official government fuel economy ratings between your old vehicle and the new vehicle to be purchased.
• 1 Year of continuous registration and insurance must be provided at time of delivery, no exceptions
• You cannot receive the CARS Rebate money in addition to a Trade-in-value; you only get the greater of the two. (i.e. If your trade-in is worth less than the maximum CARS rebate of either $3,500 or $4,500 - based on the MPG's of the New vehicle you are purchasing - you only get the Rebate value toward the purchase of the new car.  However, if your trade-in is worth more than the maximum CARS rebate that you qualify for, you can only get the trade-in value toward the purchase of a new car, you do not get both.)
• In addition to the available CARS Rebate you may qualify for, any Rebates & Incentives that are available from the Manufacturer at the time of purchase (i.e. rebates offered from Cadillac, Saab, Subaru, or Kia) toward the purchase of a New Car are ALSO applicable!
